Gotabhaya Rajapakse has sent a letter to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena stating that he will resign from the presidency.
He has issued this letter after coming to Singapore.
Thus, the position of the President of Sri Lanka is currently vacant and a President must be elected constitutionally.
The party leaders have agreed to choose the new president through the parliament.
Accordingly, a vote in the Parliament is scheduled to be held next Wednesday.
