Although it has been decided to invite new tenders for the long-term procurement of coal needed for electricity generation in Sri Lanka, the Ceylon Electricity Board says that there may be a long power cut from next month.
The Ministry of Power and Energy stated that the Gal Aguru Company has decided to announce a new international open competitive tender allowing any suitable supplier who is capable of supplying Gal Aguru on a long-term credit basis.
In order to avoid the current shortage of coal, the minister in charge stated that steps will be taken to promptly bring in the coal stocks of 19 ships that are to be received according to the tender issued last year.
